Following the Troops
Military strategists follow the troop movements of their enemies. When the troops are moving, where they’re moving, and the types of troops being moved can often give away the intentions of the enemy. Any military action, it seems, begins with a massing of the troops.
With this in mind, wouldn’t we, as church leaders, do well to see how Jesus is moving His troops – to understand how He wants us to “attack” our communities? In other words, wouldn’t knowing the gifts/passions/talents of our members help reveal how God wants to use our churches to reach those around us?
Several years ago, our church began to use PLACE as our personality and spiritual assessment tool. As we have reviewed the results, we have noticed the growth of certain personality and spiritual gift sets that would be helpful in starting new ministries. Knowing this, we’ve started looking for those places where God seems to be “moving His troops.”
What about your church? How has God amassed troops in your congregation? What ministries can you discern from the people God has brought to your church? Doesn’t it make sense that, if God is calling us to engage the world, He would give us the “troops” to do it?
What are the gifts of your people? What community need do they match?
I’d love to hear your stories, you can leave them in the comments below.
